Antonio d' Oliveira Pinto da França was born in Portugal in 1935. He graduated in law at the University of Lisbon and entered the Portuguese Diplomatic Service in 1961. In February 1965, he was appointed Consul for Portugal in Indonesia. During his five years' stay in that country, he paid frequent visits to Sumatra, Java, Bali, Celebes, Ambon, Sumba, Sumbawa, Flores and Timor. He always maintained close contacts with Indonesians of varied social status, particularly with historians and ethnologists.
